Your eyes can get dry for a lot of reasons. A lot of people have the same problem, especially as they age. Dry, gritty or watery eyes make it difficult to perform otherwise-easy tasks such as reading, working on a computer or watching TV. But there are ways to make your peepers feel less pain or irritation.
When you want an optometric practice that’s dedicated to providing the topmost standard of personalized care, look no further than the office of Dawn Rakich Optometrist. We offer an extensive menu of services, from eye exams and prescriptions, to contact lenses and eyeglasses for people of all ages.
While there are actions you might already be taking to find relief, such as using warm compresses and artificial tears, you could also be unaware that you’re doing things that aren’t helpful.
See if you’re “guilty” of any of these.
Being outdoors without protection from the sun or wind. Wear sunglasses or tinted wraparound glasses that fit close to your face and provide protection on the sides. Always use them during the day and when it’s windy.
Not blinking often enough. Many people don’t realize that they blink less while they’re focused on activities such as reading, watching TV and driving. So remind yourself to blink more while visually engaged; you’ll produce more tears.
Using the incorrect type of eye drops. Some artificial tears are better than others. The types that are supposed to eliminate redness contain chemicals that shrink your eyes’ blood vessels. Some artificial tears also have particular preservatives that don’t favor sensitive eyes. An optometrist can tell you which are beneficial to your eyes.
Wearing mascara and eyeliner. They can block the glands in your eyelids that make tears. And never apply eyeliner along the inside of your eyelids. It was a great look for Princess Diana, but it might have blocked her glands and introduced bacteria.
Limiting your liquids. Dehydration makes a big impact on your eyes. Go for eight to 10 glasses of water per day. If that’s not feasible, down foods that contain a lot of liquid, such as tomatoes, lettuce, celery and watermelon.
