People with vision loss aren’t blind; they can see but just not very well. Vision loss makes being out and about in public challenging and somewhat stressful. But the privacy of your home is your “safe space,” especially if it’s laid out for easy navigation.
The clarity of your vision affects how you live. We at the office of Dawn Rakich Optometrist understand this and are here for you. We listen to your needs and collaborate with you to help your eyes stay healthy. We also carry contact lenses and a large variety of eyeglass frames for your every need.
Benefit from an organized home environment by taking these tips.
Clear out the clutter. Get rid of things that litter your floors, counters and tabletops. You’ll cut down on tripping hazards and be able to locate things quickly.
Arrange your possessions by the frequency of their use. Put the coffeemaker you use every day within easy and obvious reach, and stash a rarely-used electric can opener in a cabinet.
Give similar objects a designated location. Put all of the device chargers for your smartphone, cordless landline extensions, powered toothbrushes, etc., on a specific table or counter. Place all cleaning supplies in a bin.
Separate your paperwork. Bills, bank statements, mail and important legal documents can turn into a frustrating jumble. Use a file cabinet or some other precise system to keep it all categorized.
Make your home a safety zone. Install handrails on each staircase, and lay vivid, light-reflecting tape on each step. Bathrooms are wet and slippery. Mount grab bars—ones held in place with screws, not suction—in the shower and bathtub, and next to the commode.
Light the way. The brighter, the better. Place lamps and overhead lights wherever the quality of light is medium or low.
Eliminate area rugs. They’re notorious tripping hazards for anyone and everyone.
